What we treat

Grief and adjustment

Grief is not an illness, and most of it does not need treating. Sometimes, though, it becomes something that will not move, or tips into something else.

What it can look like

  • Loss that still feels immediate long after it happened
  • Difficulty functioning at work or home since the loss or change
  • Sleep and appetite that have not recovered
  • Withdrawing from people who want to help
  • Guilt or preoccupation that circles without resolving
  • A major change — divorce, illness, job loss, relocation — that has knocked you off your feet

You do not need to recognise all of these, and recognising them is not a diagnosis. That is what the evaluation is for.

How we approach it

The first thing to establish is whether what you are experiencing is grief taking its course, or depression that has settled in behind it. Those need different responses, and the distinction is genuinely difficult to make from the inside.

You will not be pushed towards medication for a normal response to loss. Where symptoms have become severe or persistent enough to be treatable, treatment is available and discussed openly.
